Missouri lawmakers are considering two different options for enticing people to pay overdue taxes.
A tax amnesty proposal presented Thursday to a House committee by Republican Rep. , of Carthage, would waive all interest and penalties for delinquent taxpayers who pay up between Aug. 1 and Oct. 31.
A would waive all penalties but only half the interest, and it would apply only to delinquent taxpayers from whom the Department of Revenue was not already trying to collect money. The governor's plan is sponsored by Democratic Rep. , of Columbia.
Nixon's plan is projected to bring in $31 million. Flanigan believes his plan would bring in more money, though a Revenue Department official questioned that assertion Thursday.
