Founded in 1880, the begins its 2018-19 season this weekend.
鈥淚t鈥檚 an exciting time,鈥� Marie-H茅l猫ne Bernard said on Tuesday鈥檚 St. Louis on the Air in advance of the SLSO鈥檚 139th season that features music director designate St茅phane Den猫ve.
While Dev猫ne does not officially start as music director until the 2019-20 season, he will conduct four concerts, and Bernard explained his role this year with an analogy.
鈥淚magine that as you鈥檙e about to make a commitment to marry someone, there鈥檚 the engagement period, which leads to marriage,鈥� the president and CEO of the SLSO said.
This allows time for the orchestra and Dev猫ne to become acquainted and share ideas and philosophies about how they will perform together, 鈥渁nd always focusing on what the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is about, what鈥檚 our unique voice, and what talent do we have on stage and what is [it] this community aspires to,鈥� Bernard said.

As the SLSO often hosts guest artists, composers and conductors, Finley, vice president, artistic and operations, acknowledged that there are 鈥渃ertainly more female conductors than usual this season.鈥�
鈥淧art of that is because we have a resident conductor, , who we believe greatly in, and we鈥檙e excited to start a season with, and [she] connects with the orchestra at a very deep level,鈥� Finley said.
