Perseverance and triumph in St. Louis history will be explored in a new exhibition, opening today at Salon 53, a private art gallery in north St. Louis.

The 25 artists of "2-5-Oh!," all with ties to St. Louis, examine good times and bad. Their work reflects on adversity brought about by repression and discrimination, beginning with St. Louis鈥� original Native American inhabitants. It continues with an exploration of real-estate redlining that kept African Americans and others from living in many neighborhoods.
Salon 53 owner Freida Wheaton told 漏 2024 外网天堂 and the Beacon that the component of "struggle" marks the challenges that led to achievement.
鈥淭o get to the 鈥榟appy鈥� in life sometimes you have to go through a lot of hurdles,鈥� Wheaton said. 鈥淲e wanted to include those aspects of those struggles that eventually lead to triumph.鈥�
Wheaton hopes that people will leave the exhibit with a feeling that St. Louis is not several cities, but one cohesive place.
鈥淲e鈥檙e not the North Side, we鈥檙e not the South Side, we鈥檙e not the West End, to the exclusion of other geographic areas,鈥� Wheaton said. 鈥淚鈥檓 hopeful they will have a sense of 鈥榃hat do we need to do next as we kick off year 251?鈥欌��
More Alliance Openings Through April
"2-5-Oh! Surprise, Sadness and Struggle鈥� runs through Dec. 31. It鈥檚 one of eight exhibitions of which opened on Feb. 1 with "We Have Not Forgotten" at on Locust Avenue. 鈥淣ot Forgotten,鈥� an exploration of local history and some of the African Americans who helped make it, runs through March 7.
"Celebrating the Past," second exhibition in the series is open at near Washington Avenue. On Feb. 29, will debut its 鈥淪t. Louis Blues: A Musical Legacy." On March 1, opens "Moments The Time of Your Life," which includes 鈥淪ongbird,鈥� featuring South African artist Jabu. And on March 8, presents 鈥淜reative ConneXions" with a viewing that鈥檚 open to the public.
More 鈥淪t. Louis Through Artists鈥� Eyes鈥� exhibition openings continue through the spring at L. D. Ingrum Gallery & Studio and Exodus Gallery, which debut their shows April 19.
